1959年ミュンヘン（ドイツ）生まれ。1980年代より各地にて作品発表多数。またキュレーションも数多く手がけ、現在フランスとイタリアを拠点に活動している。

ティルマン氏による芸術的探究は、形式的に言えば「還元的芸術（reductive art）」という言葉と結びつくでしょう。「還元的芸術」とは、ミニマル・アートや具体美術（Concret Art）が築いた枠組みの余波のなかで生まれた概念であり、かつてはほとんど神聖視されていたものが越境され、新たに開かれていくなかで提示されたものでもあります。芸術家は、私たちの潜在的な可能性を掘り起こすこと ―すなわち物理的・精神的世界での試み― を通して、知覚や視覚的コミュニケーションに揺さぶりをかけます。その試みは主観と客観のあいだに摩擦を生み出し、排他的でなく包摂的であり、不可視のものを可視化して「現実」の世界へと還元するものです。
ティルマン氏の作品には、「光が世界を描く（light paints the world）」という言葉に表されるように、光と空間への眼差しがあります。それは先述の創造的属性の探究であり、光と空間あるいは空間性そのものへの探究であり、日常的な知覚の境界を超えようとする試みです。それらの創造は身体的・精神的な開放を語りかけ、観者は与えられた空間のなかで光／時間の移ろいにふれ、多様な視覚的可能性との対話へと誘われます。形式的な枠組みや先入観を手放し、心をひらいて向き合うことで、その多面的な作品世界に没入することができるでしょう。
ティルマン氏の探究において、重要な役割を果たすのが「白」という色／素材です。彼にとって ‘白’ という素材は、空間や空虚、エーテルといった観念を喚起し、作家自身にも観者にも探求されることを欲する空白でもあります。白い空間 ―それが一枚の紙として現れるにせよ、アルミ板に描かれたものとして現れるにせよ、あるいは空間そのものとして現れるにせよ― は、思索や相互作用のための場を生み、内と外をつなぐ瞑想の場となるでしょう。
描かれたオブジェにみられるこうした思想は、場にちなむインスタレーションにも反映されています。建築的な構造をもとらえるそれらの作品は、周囲そのものが思考の担い手となり、構築、層化、透明性、相互作用、そして瞑想的な体現へ導くことで、内外の対話が生み出されます。
紙の作品、いくつかの描かれたオブジェ、そしてサイトスペシフィックな作品が皆さんをお迎えする本展覧会。kenakianでの《PASSAGE》では、近年ティルマン氏が展開してきた芸術的プロセスを辿る旅をぜひご高覧ください。
On a formal note, Tilman`s artistic endeavour can be associated with the term `reductive art`.
`Reductive`art is a term coined in the aftermath of the strict and rigid outlines set by Minimal Art and Concret Art; what was once almost sacred can now be transgressed, opening up again. By unearthing the potentials inherent to the realities of our being – experiments in a physical and mental world – the artist seeks to challenge our perception as well as our visual communicatiion. This entanglement creates a friction between the subjective and the objective, is inclusive rather than exclusive, it wants to make the unseen seen and to bring its conclusions back into the `real` world.
Tilman`s work focuses on the perception of light ( `light paints the world` ) and space and/or spatiality.
The work can be understood as an investigation of beforementioned creative attributes and an exploration into the realm of light and space and its potentialities what aims to go beyond the perimeters of common perception. These objects ask for bodily and mentally openess, allowing the spectator to interact or participate in the movement of light/time in given space and enter into a dialogue with the offered visual possibilities.
To submerge into his multifaceted work, one should leave behind any formal aspects or preoccupations and approach these `objects` with an open mind.
In this artistic research the color/material `white` plays a vital role. ” The `material` white suggests to me the idea of space or spatiality, ether, emptiness, ….an emptiness that wants to be explored by myself as well as by the viewer. The white space – may it manifest itself as a mere sheet of paper, a painted plaque of aluminum etc. or even as the space itself – forms a refuge for reflection and interconnection, a place for meditation and interaction between the inside and the outside.”
What relates to the `painted objects `, can also be detected in his large scale in-situ installations taking on an architectural form, where the surrounding space itself functions as a carrier of thought, bringing into play the ideas of construction, layering, transparency, interaction as well as meditative attitude, to form an interior/exterior dialogue.
The project `PASSAGE` conceived for kenakian Art Space, provides the viewer with a journey through an artistic process developed over the recent years; this journey will include recent works on paper, some `painted objects`as well as one site-specific structure.
